I’m doing a little series of posts that feature old blog posts. I have been going back and looking at them. It’s been fun. I started blogging in June of 2009…WOW. Over ten years. I’m so glad I’ve kept the blog as a diary of sorts…today I’m telling you about things I was working on in March of 2012.
I was just finishing up my Crumb Along Sew Along. This is the quilt I came up with for the final finish. It’s a combo of strings, crumbs and improv blocks.
It was so fun to make. I just love it. I used lots of orphan blocks in it too.
I’ve had what I call the great quilt give away at my house several times. I let the kids pick out any quilt they want (except for about five quilts I haven’t put in the pile for them to choose from-this one being one) and they can take the quilt home. I’ve done this with friends and family. I love doing it. Both times Kelli has foregone her choice. Once she said she wanted this quilt when I was ready to part with it. The other time she said she wanted my Pineapple Crazy quilt when I was ready to part with that.

Buck was home one day…check it out. He was sewing. Here he was making a gun sleeve.
I had just ordered the Tumbler Template is designed by Marti Michell. You can order the template here. I had done a little tutorial on how to use it.
Here it is… Start off by turning the template upside down. Trim off the edge. I am working with a 3 1/2″ strip from my scrap users system.
Move the template over and cut again.
Flip the template and cut again.
I went on and used the smallest marking lines using 2 1/2″ strips and made baby tumblers. I finished that project and it still sits today on my computer desk under my keyboard.
I made a little wool needle book. It was so fun. I still have it in my sewing room too.
I was busy hosting the Quilt Square Quilt Along. These were the mini quilts of the month.
I am happy to say I still have these!! I love when I don’t make “dated” things. Classics like these in my antique house are always in style.
I just love the fabric I picked for this the binding on the red and blue one below.

The quilt book that I had just bought was, History Repeated: Block Exchange Quilts by the 19th-Century Patchwork Divas
It was my new favorite then and still ranks high as a favorite.
I just adore this book…always have, always will. I can’t tell you how often I pull it out and page through it. Ah…I still haven’t made a quilt from it but someday…someday for sure!! Working with Reproduction prints is my favorite.
Kelli had me busy at the longarm. She had made a wedding quilt for her brother in law who was getting married. The bride had requested black and white for a quilt.
The pattern Kelli used for the quilt is Blue Ridge Beauty. It can be found in Bonnie Hunter’s book, Adventures with Leaders & Enders: Make More Quilts in Less Time!

I was working on and finished a wool applique project, Alphabet Song by Threads That Bind. This was fun to do and hangs in my sewing room. I love things with alphabets so that’s probably why I like cross-stitch samplers.
At the end of March 2012, I was gearing up and was going to reveal the Quilt Along block for April. I let those who were quilting along to pick their own blocks for the month of April.
I was trying to be a book hostess and encourage the group so I, like a good hostess made a sample of the blocks they could choose from.
I even made the applique one only I made mine in wool applique.
The highlight of the month happened on the very last day of the month. Kelli and I went to Moline with the Mississippi Valley Quilters and saw Bonnie Hunter. We met so many great people there. Some of the relationships I still have today, 10 years later. It was so fun.
Thanks to the gals that were there that we’ve stayed connected to.
It looks like we were making the quilt Smith Mountain Morning in the book Scraps and Shirttails II. Karl now owns that quilt.
The retreat went into April so hopefully next month I’ll have more pictures to share with you.
…oh, I love doing these blast from the past posts. I love looking back and seeing what I was up to.
